The Challenger Bread Pan

I absolutely love baking bread in my Challenger Bread Pan. It has completely replaced my Dutch oven for bread baking in my kitchen. I highly recommend it. However, I know the price point of the Challenger (around $225) puts it out of reach for many people, and a lot of casual bread bakers are looking for Challenger Bread Pan alternatives.

So, I wanted to put together a list for you of alternatives to the Challenger Bread Pan that are similar in function, but don’t break the bank. Here are five alternatives to the Challenger Bread Pan that are more affordable:

  1. Emile Henry Bread Cloche
  2. Emile Henry Baguette Baker
  3. Breadtopia Cloche Clay Baker
  4. Lodge Cast Iron Combo Cooker
  5. Lodge Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven

4 Features to Look For in a Challenger Bread Pan Alternative

To me, there are four features of the Challenger Bread Pan that set it apart from other baking vessels: an oblong shape, heavy-duty construction, conveniently placed handles, and a shallow base. The more of these boxes a baking vessel can check, the more it can compete with the Challenger.

Oblong Shape

The Challenger Bread Pan has a long oval-like shape that makes it perfect for fitting boules, but also batards, or even two demi-baguettes. This is something a regular Dutch oven usually can’t do. Therefore, a good alternative to the Challenger should have similarly oblong dimensions. As a reference, the Challenger Bread Pan is 11.5″ long, 9″ wide, and 5″ tall.

Heavy-Duty Material

Strong, heavy, black cast iron makes up the entirety of the Challenger Bread Pan. Cast iron is the ideal heat conductor for the home oven, even better than enameled cast iron, according to Modernist Bread (source). If you want a good alternative to the Challenger Bread Pan, it should be made of cast iron, or some very similar heavy-duty material.

Conveniently Placed Handles

One thing I love about the Challenger Bread Pan is its amazing placement of handles. It has six different handles on different parts of the vessel – two on top for removing the lid, and four on the ends which line up perfectly where the base meets the lid. A great Challenger Bread Pan alternative should have handles that make the bread baking experience convenient.

Shallow Base

Jim Challenger often talks about designing the Challenger Bread Pan with home bakers in mind. Well, home bakers were often burning themselves on the tall sides of traditional Dutch ovens while they were transferring in their bread. So, the Challenger was made with a shallow base and raised lid – to prevent burnt hands! Any baking vessel with a similar shallow base would make it comparable to the Challenger and attractive to bread bakers.

Without further ado, here are five cheaper alternatives to the Challenger Bread Pan:

1. Emile Henry Bread Cloche

The Emile Henry Bread Cloche is a beautiful French baking vessel and a great Challenger Bread Pan alternative. It’s made of heavy, refractory, ceramic material and it has a shallow base. It also has three conveniently placed handles – two on the base, and one on top. Beyond that, it is oval shaped and even slightly bigger than the Challenger. The Emile Henry measures a huge 13.2 x 11.2 inches, while the Challenger only measures 11.5 x 9 inches.

As far as features go, it checks off 4 out of 4 of the Challenger Bread Pan “boxes”:

  • Oblong Shape
  • Heavy Duty Material
  • Conveniently Placed Handles
  • Shallow Base

You can get this cloche on Amazon for around $94.

The Emile Henry Bread Cloche is lacking in one area, however. Although it is technically larger than the Challenger, its rounded edges make the functional baking surface of the vessel smaller than that of the Challenger Bread Pan. So, unfortunately, you cannot easily bake two demi-baguettes in this baking vessel.

If you’re interested in the Challenger Bread Pan specifically for the purpose of baking small baguettes, you’re best option will be a baguette baker, like this next one on the list.

2. Emile Henry Baguette Baker

The Emile Henry Baguette Baker is a great alternative to the Challenger Bread Pan since it is the perfect size for baking three demi-baguettes at once. If you’re looking for a baguette-specific baking vessel that is long enough to hold small baguettes, and also holds in steam, this is the vessel for you.

As for features, this baguette baker checks off 2 out of 4 of the Challenger Bread Pan “boxes”:

  • Oblong Shape
  • Heavy-Duty Material

You can get this baguette baker on Amazon for around $130.

This baking vessel is obviously limited in that it can only hold baguettes and nothing larger. Plus, the baguettes it produces are definitely on the smaller side. If you are only looking for a baguette baker, this will do, but if you want to bake larger loaves too, check out one of these other options.

3. Breadtopia Cloche Clay Baker

The Breadtopia Cloche Clay Baker is a classic alternative to the Challenger Bread Pan. This vessel doesn’t have nearly as many convenient handles as the Challenger, but the cloche by Breadtopia is long enough to hold large batards, it’s made of heavy-duty ceramic, and it has a shallow base.

As far as features go, this vessel checks off 3 out of 4 of the Challenger Bread Pan “boxes”:

  • Oblong Shape
  • Heavy-Duty Material
  • Shallow Base

You can get the Breadtopia Cloche Clay Baker on Amazon for around $89.

Many people swear by the Breadtopia Cloche Clay Baker. It is perfect for long batards or even one demi-baguette or loaf of French bread. But one downside to this vessel is that it doesn’t fit round loaves (boules). If you like the freedom of baking whatever shape of bread you want to, you might want to go for something a little larger, like the next vessel on this list.

4. Lodge Cast Iron Combo Cooker

The Lodge Cast Iron Combo Cooker is praised in both the books Tartine Bread and Modernist Bread as being the best bread baking vessel for a home oven. As such, it is a great alternative to the Challenger Bread Pan when you’re looking for a cheaper option.

This combo cooker is made of cast iron and it has a shallow base, just like the Challenger. It checks off two out of the four boxes of Challenger Bread Pan features:

  • Heavy-Duty Material
  • Shallow Base

You can get one of these Lodge Cast Iron Combo Cookers on Amazon for around $34.

Although it isn’t an oblong or oval shape, the diameter of the combo cooker is long enough that it can hold both large boules and batards. And even though the combo cooker has longer, pan-type handles, instead of smaller lid-type handles, they are very functional and easy to hold. At the affordable price, I would recommend this baking vessel to anyone.

5. Lodge Enameled Cast Iron Oval Dutch Oven

The Lodge Enameled Cast Iron Oval Dutch Oven is a great, cheaper alternative to the Challenger Bread Pan. It can fit both boules and batards, it has convenient handles, and it’s made of enamel-lined, heavy-duty cast iron, which is great at radiating and retaining heat.

As for features, this baking vessel checks off 3 out of 4 of the Challenger Bread Pan “boxes”:

  • Oblong Shape
  • Heavy-Duty Material
  • Conveniently Placed Handles

This option is a great choice for those of you want a bread baking vessel that can also double as a useful kitchen tool when you’re not making bread. This Dutch oven can be used for roasting chicken, simmering stews, braising meat and much more.

You can get your own Lodge Enameled Cast Iron Oval Dutch Oven on Amazon for around $89.

One downside to the Lodge Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven is that it doesn’t have a shallow base. That means, to avoid getting burnt, you’ll have to carefully transfer your dough into the pot slowly, or lower it in on a sheet of parchment paper. Also, you can’t fit baguettes into this one either.

Conclusion

There is nothing that can perfectly compete with the Challenger Bread Pan – it’s definitely made for bread bakers by a bread baker.

But, if you’re looking for a cheaper option, the best Challenger Bread Pan alternatives are the Emile Henry Cloche, the Emile Henry Baguette Baker, The Breadtopia Cloche Clay Baker, the Lodge Cast Iron Combo Cooker, and the Lodge Enameled Cast Iron Oval Dutch Oven.

As an affiliate of Challenger Breadware products, I assure you that you will not regret buying anything that Challenger makes – the bread pan truly is amazing! But, if you must look for something else, go for one of the baking vessels I mentioned above. Any of them will serve you well in your home kitchen.
